My students need dry erase markers and fraction tiles for math stations.
My students need a kidney shaped table where they can meet with me for small group help.
My students are from a small rural school. Resources are extremely limited and classes do not receive a yearly budget. Necessities only are ordered, but still many basics cannot be purchased. I am passionate about helping students succeed and find their potential. Education is their launching pad.
More than half of the students come from impoverished homes.
Some live on farms while others live in town. They come to school each day, bringing with them either happy home lives or broken ones. Many are dirty and unkempt. Some are loved but too many are not. School is their haven. It is where their stomachs are filled, their minds are enriched, and their hearts and souls are listened to. They have dreams, hopes, and desires. They love to play outdoors, listen to stories, celebrate birthdays, play ball and sing songs. Many come from generational poverty. Our school works every day to help our students aspire to higher things, have goals, and learn to solve problems. And when they fall down, we strive to teach them to stand back up, brush the dirt from their knees and smile, because ups and downs are all opportunities to grow. We as teachers look for that sparkle in our students' eyes, the sparkle that says, "Now I understand!"
My Project
The table gives us a place to have small group lessons. Small group provides focus for areas needing further concentration and guidance. For many students, these small group discussions are a safe zone and they are more likely to share their ideas and struggles.
The dry erase markers we use in our math stations to enrich our lessons and skills. They are also used with individual white boards (1 per student ) to do their work on during whole group lessons. This tells me immediately who "gets it" and who doesn't, and how to meet their needs with immediate feedback. Dry erase markers are used daily. I chose a brand of marker known to last longer.
The fraction strips I can use on the magnetic board for students to see the manipulation of this often difficult area of math.
I am striving to create a very safe and structured learning atmosphere, one in which students know their needs, talents and questions are noticed, heard, and responded to.
Their supplies need to be quality, because THEY are quality. Being poor should never mean a child receives an inferior education. They need to know what life can offer them because they have awesome stuff inside them to make the world blossom!
