They love to play. They love to help each other and are compassionate. They love having books read to them. They are first graders! My school is located in a rural community. As is the case with a lot of rural communities, funds for classroom technology are limited. There is wonderful camaraderie with the first grade teachers. The community is supportive of the school and wants to see students succeed.
My Project
A document camera will help my students in numerous ways. I use Reader's and Writer's Workshop daily. For Reader's Workshop I introduce students to various reading strategies and story elements. These reading strategies are: Metacognition, Schema, Visualizing, Questioning, Inferring, Determining Importance, and Synthesize. For Writer's Workshop I teach the writing strategies and skills, literary elements, literary techniques, genre, and text features. I teach a mini lesson using books as my mentor text. My students need to be able to see the words and pictures from the books. When they can see the words and pictures, this helps them make connections to the text and apply what they are learning daily in their Writer's Workshop journals or writing assignment.

They will be able to see the mentor text clearly and apply what they see and learn daily. They will no longer have to squint to see the pictures or words! Being able to see the words and pictures clearly will carry over to their Reader's and Writer's Workshop journals. As a result, their reading and writing skills will improve. They can now read the words projected on the screen as a whole class or individually.
