For students who may have little quiet space at home, a cozy reading nook in class is a great place to get lost in a book.
We are a Title I public elementary school in a large urban community in Missouri.
All of our students are eligible for free lunch. Many of our families are English Language Learners. In the 2015-2016 school year, I have a split class of Kindergarten and first grade boys (yes, all boys!)
My Project
We thought we hit the jackpot when I managed to salvage an old, not very gently loved couch from our teacher's lounge a couple of years ago when it was being replaced with an upgrade. We learned quickly that there was a very good reason it was heading for the garbage dumpster that day... the left side of the couch separates from the arm when you sit on it too roughly or jump up onto the seat! When the side separates, the couch tilts! We attempted to repair it and began using it with great care in so many ways! We use it as our listening center and as a relaxing area for kiddos who are not feeling great to rest for a bit. We have an aquarium set up across from the couch and students use the couch to sit on while watching our fish when they need time to calm down. The couch is also used as a quiet, comfy reading nook. It has truly become a multi-purpose and essential part of our classroom community. Our attempt to repair the couch held up for awhile, but we now need a replacement and this is where we need a Read & Relax Book Station couch with baskets.
Having a new couch will mean so much to my students, especially a couch with built-in storage for our listening center materials so everything they need will be right where they use it.
Our current 2nd hand (or possibly 3rd or 4th hand!) couch is regularly separating from the arm at this point, making our ideal reading nook not so ideal any longer. Please help us give our kiddos a safe, comfy place where they may stop time and use their imaginations while reading and/or relaxing. Thank you!
