This year we are implementing Independent Reading Time! After snack, students pack and begin their Independent Reading Time. They take out reading basket and begin reading. This routine helps sets the tone for the love of reading, and students are engaged all day!
I teach in a neighborhood school with students coming from a variety of backgrounds and previous experiences.
Four different languages are represented among our student population and over 80% of the student population qualify for free or reduced meals. Students start kindergarten with a wide range of skills. We discuss the importance of being accountable for our learning and setting goals. Students are excited to increase their reading skills and love independent reading time. We do not have enough lower kindergarten through early first grade reading leveled books for our classroom library. I am requesting Leveled A-D books to fill this void.
My Project
Once a week my students are allowed to "shop" for new books to read at their individual reading level. These books are stored in each student's reading basket. These reading baskets are kept at tables where students work. This allows access to books at times when students complete work during the day, and students can read to self or with a partner. We have Independent Reading Time at the end of each day. Having good quality literature at the "just right level" for each student will give students an opportunity to have daily practice reading books they have chosen and are excited to read. This overall feeling of excitement helps students to be determined to read and comprehend their just right books. I know their reading abilities will increase and grow with "just right books" in their hands!
Simply put, I do not have enough books for our classroom library.
I have some titles, however we do not have enough books for each child to have a supply of "just right books" in their reading basket. My students want to read, but need the leveled "just right books," including both fiction and nonfiction books. Thank you so much!
