Global Connections Inspired by a Story and a Microscope.
My students need a class set of A Long Walk to Water & microscope to compliment our science unit regarding natural resources, & 3 copies of The Watsons Go to Birmingham.
Our classroom tries to think big. Placing science & social-studies content into a real-world context helps my students see beyond the classroom and can spark a desire to do something about those issues. Having access to additional resources is a huge help in making these connections.
The community we serve can be described as rural and economically depressed.
We have great students and teachers that want to make our community a better place. Any chance to present global issues in a way that connects us to others creates a great opportunity for something exciting. As a result, our school has done some great things for organizations in our community and across the globe.
My Project
Making the connection between the scientific concept of using our natural resources wisely with a literary example of someone their age being affected allows students to deepen their learning. Water quality, or lack thereof, is a real concern for many around the world. We talk about how we take our own water quality for granted, as many of us in the community get our water from the ground. One classroom copy of A Long Walk to Water inspired an entire grade-level to organize fundraising for an organizations that drills wells in Africa. As a result, students gain an appreciation for what we take for granted as well as gaining an understanding of global issues. They also learn that they can actually do something to help. A classroom set would allow for more exposure, along with what we see under the microscope in unclean water.
This project will help to continue pushing our students to think about the world around them.
As a result, students are able to experience a connection beyond our community that really helps someone else. This can then be transferred for doing something similar for an issue within our own community.
