My students need a photogate and timer to accurately measure the speed, acceleration, and period of moving objects.

My Students
Science all day, everyday! That's the motto of my classes. Sitting in their seats and listening to me lecture is, hands down, not what my students want. They want to see science in action, and I want to give it to them.
My middle school students crave the opportunity to explore science beyond the textbook.
With each new lesson, one of the first things I can expect to hear is a question on whether there is a lab. In a small rural school, like ours, being able to provide them with the hands-on component of scientific learning can often be challenging. It is so exciting to watch their faces light up when I am able to tell them "yes." That's why it is so important to find the resources they need to make their desires become reality, and to help them see science as a way to the future.
My Project
Grasping the concepts of speed, velocity, and acceleration are critical for any middle school student. Whether measuring the speed of the paper helicopter they made, or the acceleration of a model car down a slope, the photogate and timer will provide them with the tools to move their understanding beyond just words on a page.
Helping students see that science is all around them, all day, everyday, is what this project is all about.
Time and time again, real world applications can be seen helping students stay interested, and keep digging deeper. By putting the tools in their hands, like the photogate and timer, they have one more way to explore the science, behind what they see on a daily basis.
