My students need more books to use across the curriculum-- specifically children's literature that reinforces or introduces math concepts, including Ful and -Less, -Er and -Ness: What Is a Suffix?, The Greedy Triangle, The Penny Pot, and How Big Is a Foot?
Students love to see me enter their classroom with a book. They know it will be a time of animated story reading and discussion. I would love for our students to be exposed to books as a way of learning across the curriculum. Integrating more literature in the math curriculum is a way of doing this.
We are a neighborhood school.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. We have four languages represented among our students. Over 80% of our students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Many parents work one or more jobs so the time for literacy at home may be limited. Our students love coming to school and are eager to learn.
My Project
The requested books will be used to strengthen math instruction. Good literature is a great way to capture the attention of students. The books will be read by the teacher to introduce or reinforce a math or language concept to the students initially. After the first reading, students will be encouraged to read or explore the books independently or with a partner.
These donated books will give students access to books they otherwise would not have access to.
Seeing a concept in a picture helps to demystify difficult and sometimes abstract math. The books will make math more accessible to our students.
