My students need access to models to thoroughly understand the concepts related to the nervous system (brain, ear and eye models) in Anatomy and Physiology.
I teach Anatomy and Physiology to High School Students. My goal is to expose them to as much information regarding the human body in order to prepare them for college. In order to get them ready, students need access to materials, which I don't have. Hands-on learning is essential to gain knowledge.
My students are dedicated, motivated and eager to learn!
My Anatomy and Physiology class is an elective course geared to students going into the medical field. Students who take this course are ready to learn advanced material regarding the human body. The high school in which I teach, offers a variety of courses, which include advanced courses for our upper level students. My high school has a diverse population and many needs due to that population. Our goal is to see everyone succeed and be prepared for life after high school.
My Project
A vital part to Anatomy and Physiology is being able to identify structures in the human body. How can students accurately identify structures without models or structures in the classroom? "A picture is worth a 1,000 words" is a true statement, however to be modest, a model is worth 10,000 words. Having models relating to the nervous systems in my classroom would greatly extend the learning of the Anatomy and Physiology students. Being able to identify structures, ask questions and put it in their hands will bring the level of instruction, engagement and understanding to a new level! The models I am requesting are of the brain, ear and eye. The brain controls many functions of our bodies! It is essential to life! The ear and eye are closely related to the brain and the nervous system in their functions. All of these models represent the nervous system that all students taking Anatomy and Physiology should be able to understand.
Currently, when we discuss organs/organ systems in Anatomy and Physiology, we only have pictures from text to look at.
Pictures can show details and begin to allow students to recognize structures however, a model can do so much more for a student than a picture can. With these models, I will be able to increase understanding during lecture and labs. Students will be able to readily access materials to fully understand the nervous system and increase their overall understanding.
