Sensational Centers for Sixth Graders

My students need fun and engaging activities that they can use to learn essential skills in small groups.

My Students

According to Daphne Koller, "Our approach to education has remained largely unchanged since the Renaissance: From middle school through college, most teaching is done by an instructor lecturing to a room full of students, only some of them paying attention." My goal is to be different!

I teach two great groups of sixth graders.

My content areas are English Language Arts and Social Studies. I strive to keep lessons relevant and engaging. My students are a very diverse group. There are students from different socioeconomic groups, ethnicities, and ability levels. I have students that are English Language Learners, students with disabilities, and ones that are gifted all in my same classroom. They make up a great community of learners!

My Project

The materials I've requested will allow myself (and my teaching partner, too) to create activities that will allow the students to work in centers! This will motivate my students. They will feel empowered when given the freedom make choices and work independently. Also, I will be able to work with small groups, thus allowing the students more individual attention in regards to their learning needs and goals.

Students will truly look forward to coming to class when they are given "fun" and interesting activities!

They will be able to practice important learning skills that I would otherwise not be able to focus on during the school day. They will be able to move around and enjoy different ways to experience reading and writing. I truly feel that these materials will create a world of difference in my students literacy lives!
