My students need 1 set of Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers and 13 sets of fiction/nonfiction leveled reading books to meet their reading abilities in both fiction and non fiction texts to both master and surpass their current reading levels.
It is my goal that my students are able to read on or above grade level to enter first grade feeling like they can read anything and enjoy doing it. They biggest challenge is reading material on all reading levels for all 22 students.
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader" - Margaret Fuller
Our school is a community school and most students are enrolled in the after school program since it is located in a working class neighborhood.
The school is 80% free and reduced lunches and has a high poverty rate. The school is a close knit community whose doors are rarely closed.
I thrive to create a warm and inviting learning environment for my 22 students to learn and take risks with their learning. Literacy is a difficult skill to master and I want to offer my students books that invite them to expand their proficiency and allow them to experience the joy of escaping into a good book that lasts a lifetime.
My Project
I am requesting 1 set of Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers and 13 sets of fiction/nonfiction leveled reading books to meet their reading abilities in both fiction and non fiction texts to both master and surpass their current reading levels.
With 22 students with varying levels of reading proficiency from pre-reading abilities to reading on a first grade level, our classroom requires books in both fiction and non fiction to meet the reading abilities and interests of all 22 students.
I am lucky enough to have instilled my love reading in my students but listening to me read isn't as satisfying. They want to do it and I want that for them as well. We read 4 - 7 books alouds daily which aren't leveled since I am the one reading them and they are used for comprehension and pleasure. Most of these books are just too difficult for my readers. Students also participate in guided reading groups and require leveled books. Independent reading time is used throughout the day. Each student chooses 10 books each for their book bags to use during independent reading time so they need access to books that they can read and that interest them.
Books are an essential part of our day!
When children are excited about the books in their hands, they are much more determined to read and comprehend what the author has written.
This donation will allow my students to have the materials that they need to begin mastering reading so they can move up to higher reading levels as they are expected to by the end of the school year.
They want to read but they need book that they can read and I know that they will soar with just right books in their hands!
