Manipulating Plant Growth

My students need a GrowLab Compact Garden, Genetically Modified Plants Kit, and Wisconsin Fast Plants Standard Seeds to adequately study plant growth and manipulation of growth via changing variables or genetic modification.

My Students

Students in my 8th grade science classes are discovering the impact of plants on their survival, part of the quarter's unit on Survival (cells/cellular processes, plants, and genetics all tied together). It's astonishing how little background they have on plant growth, which they are manipulating.

This year's 8th grade team has 124 students who are greatly motivated and learn most by hands-on learning.

Laboratory experiments are critical to the learning of science, as they enhance it tremendously. Our middle school is very large and we have nearly 1,200 students. Typically, our school scores above state averages on standardized testing.

My Project

Resources requested will enhance our plant unit. Students will design their own experiment and choose the independent variable of their choice to study plant growth under varying conditions. This experiment will not only reveal the scientific method, but also human involvement in living organisms, thus lead to genetic modification. The conditions of their choice are science in its pure form, as they will see changes and need to make modifications as we go; it's perfect discovery!

The windows in my classroom are very drafty and we have used duct tape to seal them; however, plants cannot be put in the window sills because the temperature is drastically lower.

The materials requested for this activity will benefit ALL students to obtain an understand on experimental design and plant's importance in ecosystems. Equipment requested will be used by over 350 students a year for multiple years to come!
