"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go," Dr. Seuss. This summarizes my classroom, as my students read to learn and grow, but we are limited to just textbooks and novels. To truly grow, we need access to technology.
My students are mostly junior high students.
Some love to read, some don't. I want to foster that love in all of them by allowing them to delve deeper into the subjects we discuss. Due to being a high-poverty district, we do not have the funding to provide the technology necessary to equip our students for today's society. My students are denied the opportunities afforded to so many others because of the area in which we live. Despite our lack of resources, the majority of students in our district tend to be high-achievers who score high on state and national tests and go on to be successful in college.
My Project
My students will use these Chromebooks to complete research on topics that relate to whatever we are reading in class. This way, we can tie fiction and nonfiction together on a regular basis. They will also use them to complete listening exercises in which they listen to passages and comprehend what they are listening to, thus improving not just their literacy skills, but their discriminatory listening skills, as well. They will also use the Chromebooks to review vocabulary and literacy skills using various websites.
Right now, these students have only limited access to technology.
While I'm only requesting two Chromebooks, which wouldn't seem like a lot to most, this will be a huge improvement over what we have, which are a couple of old desktops that are very slow. My students will be able to use modern technology to widen their perspective of what we are learning.
