Active learning takes place when students are doing. As Einstein stated "The only source of knowledge is experience." I strive to actively engage my students in lessons and experiments that are relatable and interesting to them.
I have two groups of students, my third grade class that is full of energetic hands on learners, and a group of fifth graders who attend a STEM enrichment class before school starts.
Both groups have a profound love of science and shine while they build their knowledge of the world around them through project based and inquiry driven experiments and lessons. My school is a positive behavior support school so our environment is open and welcoming. Students are not afraid to take risks and test a hypothesis. They share their beliefs, their knowledge, and their trials with each other. Every one of my students has a capacity to learn and grow. Each type of learner is given the opportunity to achieve success and we are a goal driven classroom sharing in our accomplishments and our strengths.
My Project
My third grade class has become very interested in engineering and robotics ever since a STEM presentation. My students need the EV3 Brick processor, servo motors, remote control, and other pieces included to improve their understanding of robotics and engineering. My students will use the LEGO Mindstorms kit as an introduction, or a window to peer into the world of electronics and engineering. They will be able to build on their previous knowledge of working with LEGOs and expand their horizons to better understand how code, sensors, servos, and remote controls are work together while they build a programmable robot.
With the new demands for sustainable energy, the rebuilding of America's infrastructure, and the increase in high tech jobs: problem solvers will be crucial to fill future positions in the job markets.
By planting the seed of knowledge and interest in my students I will be nurturing the skills they need to enter the future job market and create critical thinkers who are also problem solvers. Through hands on experiences with relatable skills they will be ahead of the curve.
