My classroom is an interactive community that provides many learning experiences that engage the senses and multiple intelligences for students. We are a preK classroom, of 32 students, who received 4 iPad minis from our district. Osmo would be a rich, multi sensory experience for my young students
My 4 and 5 year old students attend our Title 1 preK program because they have been identified as needing language, concept, and/or motor interventions to be Kindergarten ready.
My students are inquisitive, funny, capable, smart, loving kiddos! We are located in a Title 1 elementary with a high number of free and reduced lunches served. Children in our area are from low socioeconomic families struggling to get by.
I firmly believe it is vital that I provide a plethora of opportunities, experiences, and activities for my students to build knowledge to draw from the older they get. Osmo is a dynamic, interactive way for my students to experience letters, numbers, science, problem-solving, and art through the iPads already in our classroom.
My Project
Osmo engages multiple intelligences at once--spatial, interpersonal, and motor skills. This is a more enriching experience than a simple touch-screen game where you entirely zone in on the game and lose sight of the outside world. Each Oslo game gives kids an opportunity to learn social skills and practice creative thinking with handheld pieces. Each of the free game apps are built with the utmost care for kids to use. Tangram, Words and Newton are all certified by the kidSAFE® Seal Program.
TANGRAM is a great way to exercise spatial and visual problem-solving skills with wooden pieces.
WORDS, students spell out the on-screen hidden word by tossing down real-life letter tiles. An onscreen picture gives a clue.
NEWTON will use whatever you place on the playing field! Start with a pen and paper, but students can also try objects like Osmo Tangram pieces or toys. There is no limit to how students can solve Newton levels.
Osmo will be one of the critically important components of my rich learning environment.
Technology is everywhere in our world and the more fun, thought-provoking, problem solving experiences my students can have, the better they will be. The low-income part of their lives may not get them many technology driven activities, but I want them to have them at school with their friends. The things they do, feel, and talk about with each other, while using Osmo, will truly be amazing for them.
