Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an educator, I'm preparing students for jobs that do not yet exist. Technology is evolving and and becoming more complex every day. I think it's critical to give my students every opportunity possible to engage with technology to better prepare them for the future.
My students are six, seven and eight year old first graders.
They are creative, intelligent, and always asking questions. They are very eager to learn. My school has a high English language learner population with over 50 ethnicity groups and cultures represented in the school. The school is located in a neighborhood of lower socioeconomic status, with close to 100% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Nonetheless, the parents, teachers and community members are very active in supporting the students and the school. The school is a wonderful place to work and learn as everyone is treated as though they are part of a family.
My Project
My students will use the iPads with protectives cases, screen protectors and headphone adaptors for many purposes in class. They will have the opportunity to read ebooks, use phonics apps to practice building words, sentences and even create their own stories and illustrations. As their teacher, I can create individual portfolios for each student where they will be able to access specific learning games and materials targeted to their diverse academic levels and needs. Collaboratively, students can work in pairs or triads to complete projects on Lipa Theater: Story Maker app and Inventioneers app. These apps will students to work together to be their own creative director and problem solver in both literacy and math. These two apps are just examples of hundreds of other opportunities my students could access.
Most of the children in my current and past classrooms have never experienced advanced technology like iPads.
I am sure that for many years this project will help me to impact hundreds of students in every area of education. My students will have endless books they can access, apps that will allow them to be creative and to problem solve in both literacy, math and science. This project will help me educate my students for their technologically advanced futures.
