"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." -John Dewey
The children in my classroom are full of life, laughter, and are eager to learn new things.
For my students, school is a safe learning environment where taking risks is a must in order to gain new knowledge. We all learn and grow together on a daily basis bringing an extensive amount of joy into our classroom community. With that being said, my students light up when technology is being integrated into any part of our daily routine due to the fact that many of them do not experience technology for an educational purpose at home. Technology is becoming an essential part of today's society and I know that my students' academic performance and engagement would flourish with more, steady exposure to technology within our classroom.
My Project
In our classroom of 20 students, we currently only have 2 desktop computers to use on a daily basis, with one of those desktops being my own personal computer used to project documents onto our white board. Due to our main source of classroom management being an online-based program called Class Dojo, one of the two computers is occupied about 90% of the time to display said management system. Outside of our classroom, there are over 800 students in our K-3 school, meaning many of the technology resources that are available are split amongst the building resulting in limited availability. Although availability tends to be limited, we borrow 5 iPads each day (pending availability) from our ever-so-generous STEM teacher to utilize during readers' workshop and math workshop. During this time our class uses the iPads for various centers such as listening center, STEM center, reading center, and strengthening math skills by using math applications such as Tiggly Numbers and much more.
Having technology resources readily available each day in the classroom would not only create more opportunities for learning to take place, but it would also expose the children within my classroom to new avenues of learning that they may not see in their homes due to living a financially unstable life.
In order to prepare these children for an ever-changing world, inclusion of technology in our curriculum is essential to gain the skills necessary to function in society as we know it today.
