My Students

Have you heard of zoochosis? It is when animals in zoos develop neurotic tendencies that mimic wild behaviors. I feel this is what happens to the majority of my 8th grade students. They are forced to sit for 50 minutes at a time, with only 3 minutes in between. Flex seating is my remedy!

My students are 8th graders at a Title I school.

They are typical early teens; they like to talk, and they like to move. Our school was built in 1921 and is bursting at the seams. My class size ranges from 22 to 31. The boys in my classes seem to suffer the most with traditional seating. They are not comfortable being in a chair for 50 minutes at a time, and when following a PBL model, they often need to move between groups, depending on the assignment. I am exploring different options for flex seating, and my personal reserves are tapped out, although I did get 2 new bungee chairs for Christmas! It is my hope that by expanding my seating options, I can create the optimal learning environment for my students.

My Project

Our school has recently initiated a 1:1 program, so our kids are able to use technology in school. As part of our change in direction, we are exploring flex seating options. I am currently utilizing a combination of floor pillows, stools, traditional chairs, bungee chairs, and old doc cam stations as stand up desks. These work for my students who like to stand but are clunky and falling apart. I am requesting six new streamlined stand up desks to replace my current stations. The stools are not working for my students who have an excess of energy and would like the ability to move without disrupting class, so I am hoping the exercise balls might be the answer. I am trying to offer as many chances for my students to do anything but sit in a traditional desk for the 50 minutes they spend with me.

In a school day that offers little, if any, opportunity to burn off excess energy, flex seating offers students the chance to stand up, move around, and even just rock back and forth in place, all while completing their assigned tasks.

Our school budget does not stretch to cover these extras, but my kids deserve to be as comfortable as possible to ensure they have the best chance of learning possible. By purchasing six new stand up desks and six exercise balls, I hope to help.
