Reading Around the World without Leaving Your Seat

My students need a large variety of leveled fiction and nonfiction text to help them experience the world through books at school and home.

My Students

My 2nd grade students are inquisitive and eager to learn about the world around them. Their reading levels, life experiences, and background knowledge varies. These students need a large variety of text to create "virtual field trips" during their daily reading activities.

My students are active, strong-willed, independent learners.

They think of themselves as having extraordinary intelligence regardless of their reading level, and they work diligently on a daily basis to acquire all the knowledge they can despite their monetary limitations and constraints. They need additional quality texts to support their many interests. I have shared with them this quote from Nelson Mandela: "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." My students are eager to read both fiction (to study people) and nonfiction (to study real topics) text and to share their learning with others so they, too, can be the instrument of change. As they know and believe, reading is power. These children need a larger variety of leveled text to meet ALL their needs. My students' reading levels range from kindergarten to fifth grade. My school doesn't qualify for Title I funds; however, my students' socioeconomic status does not allow for extra purchases such as books. I am requesting a large variety of leveled fiction and nonfiction text to help my students experience the world through books at school and home.

My Project

Your donations will fund a large variety of leveled text that will give all my students the same opportunities to study similar content without the stigma of being tied to a specific reading level. Imagine three students, at various reading levels, creating background knowledge and learning about a common topic or character trait and then taking risks by sharing their learning without fear of failure because the books they read were at their specific reading levels. When students are reading text that is too difficult, their ability to apply learned comprehension strategies goes down significantly. All their energy for thinking is spent on decoding the phonetic sounds of words instead of on understanding meaning. The books I am requesting will give all my students equal opportunities to have quality reading materials to enable them to grow as readers and learners and to experience all the joy books can bring. My students' self-esteem will increase, confidence will grow, and they will be able to see just how truly bright they are.

As a teacher, I must strive to meet the needs of ALL my students each and every day.

I want to help them build successful futures and become college and career ready. Dr. Seuss' famous quote exemplifies this project: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." The books I am requesting will change my students' lives by allowing them opportunities to meet new characters and travel the world all while developing a lifelong love of reading.
