My students need a comfortable rug to sit on during reading and group time. We also need sturdy book bins, organization for groups and more white boards.
"Do I have to sit on the floor?" This is the chorus I get to hear every day when we get together on the floor for learning as a group for almost every subject.
The kids I have the opportunity to work with every day have such loving personalities and this makes me want to give them all I can.
Their backgrounds are extremely humble, and they have few luxuries at home. Many of them don't even have adequate food and clothing every day. As a school and community, we are able to provide them with many of the items they lack. I, as their teacher, want them to have a fun and inviting environment to come to every day.
I have learned through the years that if students feel that their classroom is safe and enjoyable to be in, they are going to want to be there. It also gives them a chance to forget about the problems they face at home each day.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are items that the students have been asking for. The floor in our room is concrete. The small rug I currently have is only large enough for half of my class to sit on. My students are wanting a rug large enough for everyone so no one have to endure sitting on the concrete for anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes at a time. They are also asking for nicer book boxes and wipe-off boards. The ones they are currently using are cardboard and started falling apart only a couple weeks into school.
Having a comfortable place for the whole class to come together will help my students want to come to the floor for learning.
Group storage and more white boards are what I feel they would also benefit from. The students are always misplacing their group work and I feel that having a single place to put it would help them out. I was fortunate to obtain white boards through a previous project and quickly discovered that I did not have enough for my the changing amount of students in my class
