Every day we spend time reading in my classroom. Sometimes it is a book as an entire class, a book in their small groups, sometimes students reading on their own. Some days, if we are lucky, we do all 3 types of reading. Our classroom is always crazy, so finding time to read can be a challenge.
I have a great group of students.
They really are students who want to please me and other teachers. However, this group of students has been a bit of a challenge. Overall, this group of students struggles with their reading skills. We are a rural school with no library in our town. Because of this, several students do not have the option to check out different books. It is up to the school library, where they go once a week, or the classroom teacher to provide books for the students to read and enjoy.
We are a Title reading school, so we have the additional intervention teacher to send our students to. I have 10 students that leave my classroom for 30 minutes every day for her. They can also get books from her, but her resources are also limited.
My Project
Our school librarian has recently contacted Dan Gutman, the author of the My Weird School books that I am requesting. Since doing this, almost all of the students are going nuts for his books. They cannot keep them on the shelves in the library. I currently have no books by him in my classroom. If I am able to receive these books, I will be using them all the time. Every day the students will be able to use them in their reading groups where the will read for a deeper understanding.
I will also be able to use them as a whole class assignment to teach the students things such as think marks and figurative language. The books that are not in big groups will be used as materials for students to check out on an individual time frame. They can take these books home to enjoy with their family and friends. All these books will get used a ton if I am able to get them.
These books will improve my classroom library.
They will be a resource for all of my students to use. The books will also change students' lives at home, because they will be able to take the books home and share them with family members at home. It will encourage them to read more at home. These books will also improve my book closet. They will give me more options to use with my students when picking out books to teach from to help students learn specific skills and topics.
