This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This reading classroom is made up of 7th and 8th grade students. We use the Read 180 and System 44 program to increase their reading scores, but what they really get into during free read is material that feels relevant. Magazines are a great source for them!
My students are a truly amazing group of 7th and 8th graders.
Like all teenagers, they really get into novels and texts that relate to their own lives. Though we have a system that gives them material directed specifically at their individual lexile levels, magazines give them a brain break while still encouraging them to read and expand their vocabulary. I feel like a winner if I can encourage my students to enjoy reading; I love that magazines hold their attention and and give them short pieces to engage in.
My Project
Throughout the day, we have rotations that focus the students on different skills in reading: expanding vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading fluency, and phonemic awareness. In between these rotations or during free read, the students would have access to the magazines. They would LOVE to be able to choose short selections based on their interests.
As I'm sure you can relate, reading isn't for everyone.
With this project, I am hoping to encourage a love for reading with unconventional, sneaky ways! Magazines will expose the students to a wide variety of vocabulary and topics across many genres.
