This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
“Music training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the secret places of the soul.” - Plato
My music students range in age from five to twelve years old and attend school in the town of Ferguson.
These students love to sing, dance, and play! Most of my students live in poverty and struggle daily to deal with unstable homes. School is a place of safety and learning for them. The music room is a place for expression and creativity.
My Project
A cajon is a box-shaped percussion instrument from South America which can create multiple tones by playing on different areas of the front surface. They will be used alongside other percussion instruments to practice steady beat, rhythm, and meter, as well as to create and improvise music.
In a small music room like ours, everything has to serve multiple purposes.
Cajon drums have a functional and creative design which will not only allow us to drum up fantastic rhythms, but will also function as seating during direct instruction, desktops for writing, and piano benches for our classroom keyboards. They are also small and lightweight enough to be moved and stacked for movement and dance activities.
