"Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say."
--Rosemary Crossley
Some of my students are non-verbal; however, they have plenty to add to academic and social conversation. Help them communicate using alternative methods.
I am a speech language pathologist working in a middle school.
I currently provide services for students with a variety of diagnoses, including Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and multiple disabilities.
Several of my students are non-verbal or have severe speech impairments that prevent them from communicating verbally. These students deserve opportunities similar to their peers. In order to participate in academic and social conversations, these students require alternative communication methods.
My Project
By donating to this project, you will be giving my students a voice. These materials will be used to create communication binders, which my students can carry around the school building and bring home. This will allow my students to participate, not only in the school environment, but also in their community.
These binders will allow non-verbal students to request basic wants and needs, comment on academic material, reciprocate and initiate social interactions, and participate in a variety of activities throughout their day.
Think about how often you communicate during your day.
It is something most of us take for granted. By donating to this project, you will allow my students to communicate with a variety of people and participate in daily classroom activities.
