My students need transportation to Jefferson City, Mo from Springfield, MO. On this field trip we will enhance our learning about state and local government.
With the 2016 election approaching it is essential for our students to be immersed in the political realm.
With 74% of our school population receiving Free or Reduced lunch, we make up a small Title I school.
Many of these students won't have the opportunity to travel to the state capital to experience how our state government runs on a daily basis.
Our 4th and 5th grade students are inquisitive and curious about the day to day activities that occur at the capital. Our students are a unique mix in that we house a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) program as well as an English Language Learner (ELL) program. This provides us with the opportunity to share new experiences and perspectives every. day within the classroom. Now we want to share a new experience with all of our students outside of the classroom.
My Project
By donating to our project we will be able to transport about 70 students, teachers, and interpreters to and from Jefferson City, MO from Springfield, MO. When we arrive at our destination we will tour the capital building and museum, meet our representative, and tour the Supreme Court. We will also attend a session in the House and Senate chambers.
This field trip will give our students an opportunity to experience first hand what we have learned pertaining to our government and career options.
It will allow our students to become more informed citizens concerning our election process and operation of the branches of government. This is ideal timing with the upcoming election and may possibly spark an interest in students getting more involved in the democratic process in the future as well.
