My students need newer marker boards, dry erase markers, and erasers to work cooperatively together. We also need composition books and colorful paper for taking notes.
Many of my students come from wonderful homes that are able to provide all their needs. A large percentage of my students are not able to say that. Our school works closely with churches in the community to provide for those needs, but they can't cover everything.
My students live in a rural community with limited resources.
The nearest Walmart is 25 miles away. This community works hard to provide the best education available for the students, but the high poverty of this town prevents all students from having everything needed to successfully complete their work. Every student in our school qualifies for a free breakfast and lunch daily. A large percentage of the elementary kids take home food bags for the weekend.
My Project
I teach middle school math in this rural community. The school has purchased updated books for us, but my students like to use marker boards to practice working equations. I purchased a shower board and had it cut into individual boards, but they are getting old and are not easy to clean anymore. My students need new boards, actual erasers and markers so they can participate in group activities.
We also use interactive notebooks to keep our class notes in, and many of my students cannot supply their own composition books. The paper and the colored markers will help make the notebooks interesting for the students to refer to while doing their work.
The world my students will enter is a lot different than the world I entered when I left high school.
The volume of information they are expected to know (and be tested on) is overwhelming. By using a resource they can refer back to while they are learning new material, my students will have the opportunity to practice and learn the expected curriculum.
