Mr. Hicks from Ferguson MO is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need the bacterial kits and gloves to complete the experiments.

All fifth grade classrooms come to my room for an informative and engaging dose of science. For most students these topics and concepts are new. By the end of the year I need to prepare them for State Testing and excite them about science careers. We are trying to get smarter together!
My students are lacking experiences.
They are coming from homes where their parents or guardians are working several jobs, jobs with irregular hours or no jobs at all. Home life at times can be unsupervised with irregular routines. Most students are challenging in respect to following rules and routines at school. A lot of the students are intelligent, but lack the inner drive to make positive choices in their learning. They need to have opportunities that challenge them to want to learn and spark their curiosity.
With the bacterial kits that I am requesting, I hope that my students will see their school as a place that can provide them with insight into the world. I will have the students discover that taking pride on the cleanliness of our school will also help them be healthier. The bacterial kits that will let them explore the topic of Epidemiology and how good hygiene at school will prevent the transmission of unwanted bacteria. The students will take cultures around our school, study the types of bacteria, what they can cause and preventative measures that can take place. Also, the students will become advocates for our school, teaching others about hygiene at school through posters. I want the students to know that as we get smarter together about bacteria in our school we also will raise the awareness of keeping a cleaner school.
This donation will allow the students to participate in a project that our school would not be able to fund.
The bacterial kits will provide an activity that is real. It will engage the students in their school culture. I will have an opportunity to receive material and teacher resources to help teach this concept of health science. I believe these materials will also help the students to use their new knowledge outside the classroom and school walls to their homes and other places they visit.
