My Students

Today's job market has countless unfilled computer coding jobs because students aren't being exposed to these skills in school. Through an inquiry process full of questions and research, our library program seeks to expose students to a wide variety of future careers, including computer coding.

Like most kids between ages 5-11, our students are FULL of questions!

Instead of ignoring this natural instinct to question the world around them, our library and school seek to build our instruction to fit students' curiosities and interests. One curricular area we try to explore with all students is Computer Coding. Even though coding may seem complex to adults, teaching it at a young age helps build students' logic and critical thinking skills. Even if students never choose to continue with coding, the thinking process used can help benefit students for life.

My Project

As part of our library instruction, we use several online resources to help teach students computer coding. While these programs incorporate games and are fun in themselves, I seek to be able to extend these activities by allowing kids to program actual devices. The Dot and Dash robots provide a very student-friendly way to program robots with coding and test their skills in an immediate, fun, non-threatening way.

This project will help our classroom by giving students the opportunity to see computer coding in action.

These robots provide a fun way for students to experiment with coding without a fear of failure. Teaching my students to code may open up doors for future careers that my students may not have considered without this opportunity. In addition, it exposes all students to the logical thinking skills that can help them grow for a lifetime.
