My Students
Traditional textbook and paper learning is no longer the way of the future. My students need opportunities to learn through movement and music in the classroom.
My students are very active, caring, outgoing, and creative second graders in a low socio-economic school district.
They love enrichment opportunities and using non-traditional learning tools. My class loves learning and working together by connecting real life to their studies. My students work diligently every day to increase their critical thinking, application of knowledge, and enrich their learning. They are grateful and excited to have this opportunity to have their project for a classroom violin funded!
My Project
Empowering students through art is an important way to develop real life situations and make literacy more relative to students of diverse populations. My students are from an area where they receive minimal exposure to classical music and musical instruments. Throughout the year, we learn that music can help us advance our literacy skills by enabling higher order thinking, reducing stress, and providing enrichment to our curriculum. In reading and writing, we study important people--authors, musicians, artists. We write opinion texts to support the reading we have completed. We also write narrative texts about personal experiences. Many students focus on the same topic during their narrative writing because they lack exposure to new experiences. Having a violin in the classroom is an excellent way for them to gain new experiences with a different kind of music. It will also encourage my students to learn about the violin and inspire them to try and play.
This project will make a difference for many reasons.
My students lack exposure to many things; one of which is classical music. They have little to no experience with any stringed instruments. With a violin in the classroom, my class would gain experiences they likely would never have outside of the classroom. They will then have many new ideas for their narrative writing, a deeper understanding of the musicians we study, and will be able to formulate real-life experiences to write about.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
