My Students
A typical day in my classroom begins with auditory bombardment of specific speaking and listening skills including target speech phonemes at various levels of enrichment. Students are ready to begin listening to target sounds in words, sentences, or reading passages to elicit correct productions.
My students are amazing!
Words cannot describe how fortunate I am to be in such a position to shape the communication skills of kindergarten through sixth grade students. My students work hard and are very intrigued by all of the best practices and activities we do to enhance speech and language skills. I appreciate their efforts and they appreciate me! This gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. We trust each other and have a very safe environment that allows for comfort in the classroom. That warm and fuzzy feeling extends beyond the classroom. We regularly engage our parents in bring a parent to speech class days and through a monthly newsletter filled with speech and language activities and updates. My school embraces the integration of parents, family, and community. Our community is our school's foundation and what keeps us strong! We are simply "better together"!
My Project
My students are very engaged with their speech and language goals. They have adopted Continuous Classroom Improvement (CCI) principals and look forward to setting goals to improve their speaking and listening skills bi-weekly. One of the principals of CCI is using Plus/ Delta feedback systems to evaluate what the teacher did and what the students did that worked well or did not work well in regards to helping the students meet their goals. Students always mention the well-known best practices that go well such as use of auditory bombardment (i.e. listening to the teacher read/ say target words), visual aides (i.e. pictures), tactile stimuli/ cues (i.e. the teacher using touch/ pointing to various articulators), drill, homework, using a mirror, and i-pad use. The delta's the students mention are wanting to use a projector for lessons, teacher microphone, and student microphone/ recorder to practice, record, and give their very own self-analysis (feedback) about their own speech.
My project will make a difference because the basis of Speech and Language Pathology is science and everything is smarter with science!
My students will learn to use the new materials to predict outcomes of hypotheses, conduct observations, trials, repetition, and data to analyze their speech productions in an amplified and very visual, technological, and scientific manner. It will change my student's lives for the better because they will learn to use science to improve communication!
