"All Children Can Learn"
My students excel with tactile & visual activities. If my special needs children learn simple kitchen skills, these can be turned into job skills when they get older. Learning functional skills that can be turned into work is critical for all children with disabilities.
Children with disabilities need functional skills because these skills will have an impact on my students, and will help them be as independent as possible when they reach adulthood.
For example, being able to cook/prepare simple foods will help them be more self-efficient. If children can learn simple household chores, then these skills can be turned into job skills when they get older. Learning functional skills that can be turned into work is critical for all children with disabilities.
This program includes Academics, Independent Living Skills, Social Skills, and Community-Based Instruction presented in a more meaningful format. Community-based instruction provides the opportunity to learn and generalize skills in different settings, and provides the opportunity to practice social skills in the community.
My Project
Working Smarter, Together in the Classroom will give my students hands-on experience to explore the question, "How will the different consistency of food matter change when mixed?"
Students will complete homemade marshmallow chemistry experiments, construct an edible earth, and perform a corncob popcorn experiment. They will also be experimenting with mixing cakes in different shapes and icing with colors.
Students will learn through cooking about the changing of molecular structure. These skills will also give the opportunity for students to acquire kitchen and fire safety knowledge. This will teach students skills for independence and help them transition after high school.
The donations to this project will improve our classroom by allowing my students the opportunity to experiment with items they would not normally have access to.
Although some items will be consumed this school year, most items will benefit future students for years to come. My students' interest is greatly increased when learning experiences are visual and tactile. The skills that my students will learn will allow them to do more things for themselves after high school.
