I love when my students say things like, "This science stuff is hard but really fun!" or "Do you think that will work?" "I'm not sure but let's try it." That makes it worth every minute of preparation.
My students are two classes of first graders--39 students total.
We are a small, close-knit, suburban school district. The community works hard to support the school and truly believes "it takes a village to raise a child." My first graders are so excited when it is time for Science!
We are becoming smarter together as we explore "How can people communicate through sound and light?" Our design challenge is to prepare a puppet show with music as we learn about properties of light and sound.
My Project
As we learn about the properties of light and sound, my students will become smarter and more prepared as they work together to become life-long problem solvers. The tuning forks will be used to explore questions such as--How do we describe sound? What is the difference between loud and soft? What makes a sound louder or softer?
We will use the document camera throughout our exploration of light and sound to assist during demonstrations and to allow the students to be able to share ideas and collaborate more easily.
Science is a subject that is often pushed to the side because of other curriculum demands.
Yet, it is often the subject that my students request most frequently. Even my students who often struggle, can find success and interest in the topics we explore. As the careers in the field of science continue to expand at such a rapid rate, I feel the obligation to give my students opportunities to gain knowledge and passion for science. My hope is that many will wish to pursue a career in science.
