"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss
One of the biggest challenges facing teachers today is having the materials available for the students to grow and learn.
Our school is a K-2 building that focuses on literacy.
Sixty percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Some of the students have hundreds of books in their home with resources abound to others who are concerned whether they will have something to eat when they get home. Our resources are limited to textbook purchases and there are limited resources left for building the classroom library. Teachers spend their own money to provide the books that they want their children to enjoy.
My Project
Our second grade team of 10 teachers is committed to building a special library of books that our second grade students can read and enjoy, build reading skills and strategies, and develop a love of reading through reading workshop. By having a library that is uniquely special to them, our students will have power and ownership over "their" books that they have selected and want to read and explore.
Lucy Calkins says
"this (Reading Workshop) gives young people extraordinary power, not only as readers, but also as thinkers.
When young people are explicitly taught the skills and strategies of proficient reading and are invited to live as richly literate people do, carrying books everywhere, bringing reading into every nook and corner of their lives, the results are dramatic."
We want our students to experience this feeling of power when they pick up a book from their own special library.
