This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come into the room every day asking what they are going to learn today. They are excited to be learning to read and to move themselves up in their reading levels. One area we are short on books is nonfiction science materials. My students want to be independent readers.
My students come from the Midwest and are currently in first grade.
We are part of the largest elementary school in our district. All of our students receive both breakfast and lunch at no cost to the families. Most students in my class have limited access to books outside of school.
My students are eager to learn and will celebrate when a peer makes gains in reading. They enjoy science and especially like when I can pair a book to a hands-on activity within a lesson. Reading within science makes us stronger together.
My Project
Students will have access to the books being requested as part of the classroom library, where they can shop each week to exchange their books. Students will also use the materials to learn how to "close read" a book to get as much information out of it as possible.
Close reading of fiction and non-fiction text is a goal for the school this year. Once students are taught how to closely read their books, they will become more independent readers making our whole school stronger together.
My students currently have access to a large amount of fiction text.
They have a very limited access to non-fiction, therefore, these materials will be a great start in increasing the classroom library to have more non-fiction materials. My students will have up-to-date science texts as opposed to text that are more dated and in some cases out of date.
