My Students

As you step into my first grade classroom, students are collaborating on projects, using technology, and participating in activities that require working together in all areas of the room! These young learners struggle with traditional seating and often stand or share chairs to get close together.

Please Help!

I am an urban teacher working with young students that are often challenged by traditional classroom seating because of attention disorders or their young age. Our budget is very limited as our school is classified as Title I with one hundred percent of our students on the free lunch program. Our school is one of the oldest operating buildings in the city as it is over one hundred years old. I have purchased what I could personally at garage sales and thrift stores but need help supplying more innovative seating for these young learners. Balanced ball chairs, foam cushions, and floor reading pillows would allow students to relax and attend to their tasks in a comfortable way instead of the traditional desk chairs. I strongly believe that the alternative seating options would allow our classroom to be more innovative. In allowing my students to sit creatively, I know they will be able to focus more on their tasks by selecting their own "comfort zone" to work together.

My Project

In my experience as a teacher, I have noticed these young children are not able to stay seated in a traditional desk and chair for very long. It's just not comfortable and it doesn't always fit each of their learning styles. Having alternative seating options will allow my students to have some choices of where best they can accomplish the classroom learning activities! Sometimes my students lack focus because their inability to sit still but sitting on the innovative Zenergy chairs will engage my students' core muscles and help them concentrate on their tasks. Floor reading pillows and foam chairs are alternative seating options for partners to relax and share their thinking as they work on fluency and comprehension skills in a focused way that is not always accomplished in traditional chairs. The novelty alone is a privilege that my students will work to earn and show that they are responsible enough to select their most appropriate work place.

The foam chairs allow students mobility during collaboration to share ideas and help each other learn in a least restrictive way.

They learn best when they can spread out all over the classroom and the Zenergy chairs are easily moved to be used by students that are challenged by attention disorders! I frequently find students sitting together on one chair or sprawled out on the floor to work together and the special floor pillows will help them comfortably sit together during literacy centers.
