You remember what it was like as a child to feel overwhelmed, antsy or just need a hug. What if there were a piece of equipment that could take those feelings away or give you the hug you need.
I teach at a great school, with a fantastic team of educators.
We teach special needs students, grades preschool through fifth. Our students face many challenges- academically, socially, and behaviorally. They also come from very low income families, struggling just to provide for their selves.
My Project
Many of our students get overwhelmed with their school work, they struggle to stay focused, or have sensory needs that require them to seek deep pressure to calm their system. When our students are showing signs that they are in need of a "squeeze" we will be able to take them to our sensory room and let them crawl through the steamroller for a few minutes to get that needed sensory input to then go back to class, ready to learn. A few minutes spent being "steamrolled" can mean a product day academically.
Having this piece of equipment for our students means that they are getting their needs met to calm their bodies and therefore their minds.
A calm body and mind leads to a productive learner. We all have a sensory system and do things to keep ourselves focused and calm- doodle on paper, chew our nails, etc. Our students just require a little more assistance in this area than they can do for themselves and using a steamroller will do this for them.
