My class is a hands-on, interactive environment that learns through discovery with cooperative learning groups. By the end of the year I would like my students to be questioning ideas and researching answers. My biggest challenge is providing meaningful experiences to discover new ideas.
My students are well educated students from an established community who thrive on experiences.
They need encouragement and interest to completely dive into a topic and appreciate the outdoors. They seek hands-on activities that involve many ideas coming together. Our test scores show most difficulty in the area of simple-machines and highest achievement when students are learning through discovery and hands-on interactive experiences.
My Project
My students need Science in a Tree to visit our school, set up the tree equipment, and help teach the lesson. The program I am choosing involves simple machines and their use in everyday life to make work easier. Students will look at the question, do simple machines make work easier? They will learn about simple machines when using pulleys and harnesses to climb the tree. They will use math skills and formulas to experience the meaning of work and its relationship to force and motion. This will give my students a chance to make predictions and master STEM concepts. In our school STEM integration has become a large goal. Using the philosophy Smarter, Together, Science in a Tree and Chesterfield can come together to meet the needs of teaching force and motion, and simple machines outdoors with a hands on connection. This project will change my students' lives by getting outdoors and experiencing science in a new, STEM, incorporated way.
Currently, our school has an outdoor classroom that is rarely utilized by grade levels.
I hope when the school sees the impacts of this educational experience with my 4th graders, they too will want to discover and explore the outdoors. When Science in a Tree has established a tree the program will be more accessible for the school in the future. They will come to our campus for a smaller cost and will only charge for the lesson.

(THIS IS AN ON-CAMPUS CLIMBING PROGRAM FOR K-12 STUDENTS CALLED SCIENCE IN A TREE. IT IS A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF RECREATIONAL TREE CLIMBING, OUTDOOR ADVENTURE LEARNING, AND HANDS-ON SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS. THEIR MOTTO IS CLIMB A TREE AND LEARN COOL SCIENCE! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: 1. THEY SETUP ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL TREES ON CHESTERFIELD’S CAMPUS WITH SUPER-SAFE ROPE & HARNESS CLIMBING SYSTEM. 2. THE SECOND PARTS INVOLVES STUDENTS LEARNING HOW TO CLIMB TREE TO THEN COMPLETE SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS.)
