Teaching 7th through 12th grade in one classroom can be an organizational challenge. Students keep their notes and handouts in binders, which allow me easy access to check their work. However, my classes have out grown their class cubbies and need a more effective way to store their binders.
I teach 7th-12th grade at a small, rural school.
My students live in a rural county with limited access to many things most of us take for granted. Our town has a gas station, two churches, and a post office. Our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch for every student, every day. Less than half of my students have Internet access at home. Many come to school without getting adequate sleep. Approximately half of our elementary students take home food bags for the weekend. That being said, our small size is also one of our greatest advantages. I teach many of my students from 7th grade until they graduate. This gives me a unique opportunity to not only observe them grow as students but also individuals. This kind of specialized instruction allows us to help our students achieve. The past 2 graduating classes have all gone on to higher education, the military, or vocational training, many on scholarship. We are doing incredible things in our tiny school and we are proud it.
My Project
Currently, my students keep their binders in six class cubbies. These cubbies were constructed by our Agricultural Education Construction class with the use of plastic crates and scraps of treated lumber. While they have served us faithfully over the last few years our current cubbies are starting to show signs of wear and an influx of several larger classes has pushed them beyond their capacity. This has led to binders being stacked on top of the cubbies and getting shuffled around. The clutter has begun to cut into classroom productivity and student organization. The upgraded organizational furniture would not only help us functionally but improve the learning environment of the classroom.
Your donations will allow me to purchase resources for my classroom that our district simply doesn't have the extra funds to provide.
Being a small, rural school our classroom budgets are rarely large enough to purchase "big ticket" items. These resources will allow my students and I to conduct class more effectively and give us a much needed organizational aid.
