Today's Students, Tomorrow's Mathematicians and Scientists
My students need calculators, math manipulatives, and presentation paper to improve mastery of content skills covered in our Math and Science activities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are putting forth their best efforts but suddenly become discouraged when there is a lack of supplies. Imagine working on a project and building up the courage to share your ideas with your classmates with no presentation charts available. This year they will develop self-confidence.
My students come from various high schools as part of an alternative program designed to offer intervention for at risk youth.
They are sometimes preoccupied with circumstances from their environment, however the school culture and climate provides the sanctuary needed to redirect their energy towards more productive things. When the expectations are set within reach but high enough to present a challenge, they rise to the occasion.
My Project
Students will participate in hands-on activities geared to facilitate learning experiences which give them real life connections and promote mastery through high interest. The person who teaches or restates what is learned retains more information than students who are minimally engaged. With the supplies requested, my students will feel confident in making presentations before their peers utilizing technology and creating anchor charts for group projects. With calculators, they can solve complex problems which require tedious calculations without interrupting classmates should they have to share materials. The advantage of having a class set of protractors allows students more time on task. As they present their anchor charts on the easel, they can more fluently explain their thinking which makes students get smarter together.
Students who are expected to perform need the accommodations necessary to get their assignments done.
My classroom is in an institution which doesn't qualify for funding which could provide basic items found in most public educational settings. Having a learning experience which is well developed evens the playing field and provides an opportunity for success, which will inspire them to reach even higher and become productive members of society, college and career ready.
