My students need 21 copies of Holes by Louis Sachar and 21 copies of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen to improve literacy. The old literature sets are beyond repair.
A typical day in my reading classroom involves allowing a student to have a choice of literature sets. They then get into groups with others who have chosen the same book. Working cooperatively in groups, students each have a role such as discussion director, vocabulary finder, illustrator, etc.
I have an average of 20 students per class.
Our school is a small school set in a rural, northwest area of Missouri. We have a view of a pond, horses and cows on one side and farm land on another. Students come from a variety of income levels. Teachers instill a community feeling within the classroom to create a closeness among classmates. We stress the importance of character education and are a "bully free" school.
My Project
My students would use the materials I am requesting during their reading class. These books would be replacing older, outdated books that have seen better days. Students in my past reading classes have found the love of reading through Gary Paulsen's books such as Hatchet and I would love to continue to use Mr. Paulsen's books. I set my reading class up in literature circle groups. Students will learn skills such as cause and effect, compare and contrast, sequencing, author's purpose, summarizing as well as self-esteem and self-respect.
These resources would allow my students more choices of books to use during reading class.
I like to give students choices of books to encourage the love of reading. Also, Hatchet and Holes are great to teach the common core standards. My students' lives will be changed for the better by learning from these books. Holes, for example, teaches self-esteem and self-respect, both of which are topics discussed during character education discussions.
