This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students range from Kindergarten through sixth grade.

Each has his/her own story to tell. Our school is located on one end of Ferguson, MO, where poverty and violence frequently occur in most of our children's lives. Despite this, our students come to school eager to learn, eager to break the cycle of poverty.

My Project

I want to explore earth science in a new and fun way with my students! Each month, our school dedicates two Fridays to science experimenting, where everyone in the entire school stops and does nothing but science! Both of my third grades that I teach will use the PolliNation Kits to learn about pollinators and their importance for our ecosystem. My students will collect data for a citizen science project with microscopes, binoculars and bug viewers. They will purchase and maintain a raised bed and compost, as well as design and build a pollinator habitat. My students will even get a chance to plant milkweed seeds at home, creating a monarch butterfly corridor. The butterfly rearing kit will allow my students to observe the phenomenon of metamorphosis, and the monarch health project will enable students to contribute research that may stop the decline of the monarch butterfly. I would like to do the same PolliNation project with both third grades so that we can compare and contrast.

Donations to our EcoSTEM project will allow sixty third graders the opportunity to study the importance of pollination.

They will grow an appreciation for pollinators and realize their importance in our ecosystem. Thank you for your support.
