Imagine being a seven year old being asked to sit for forty-five minutes and work on a project. Some kids can handle this- no problem. Others need another option- to sit AND move!
My students are second graders, seven and eight year olds, in Kansas City.
I have twenty-eight kids in my class this year, all with varying academic, social and physical needs. Some of my kids are calm, patient students that could sit all day, but most of them are typical seven year olds- they need to move!
My Project
I am requesting balance ball chairs so that my students who need additional help sitting can be successful even when it may be difficult. I am adamant about making sure kids are given plenty of brain breaks and opportunities to move throughout the day. This works for the majority of kids- but there are still some that need more. These sits will allow those students to get the movement they desperately need while also interacting and learning with the rest of the class.
This project will change the way my students learn.
Instead of being forced to sit and listen for longer than a seven year old ever should have to, they'll be able to control their movement. They'll bounce and bounce while also learning the material. The difference this project will make for my second graders will be astounding.
