This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are ready to learn, and I like to get them fired up! Each day we say, "We are superhero readers! I am going to read ____ books today!" They get to fill in the blank with a number of their choosing. It truly helps put them in a positive frame of mind!
Our school has great kids who want to learn, but since it is in a high poverty area, many don't have access to technology.
Since technology is such a huge part of the job market, I want to expose them to as much of it as I can. My Kindergarteners learn how to use various technology quickly....their little minds are like sponges!
My Project
I have found some excellent mp3 and wav files to help them with skills such as high-frequency words (sight words), letter recognition, and letter sounds. These files have been purchased and downloaded to my iTunes account, and they are a great, interactive way for them to learn these important pre-reading skills with little or no distraction. We would like a small group set of iPod Shuffles so that they can independently work on these skills.
The ability to read is the one gift that opens doors to their futures.
Since most cannot and have not traveled, books open their eyes to the world. In order to be able to read, they must be given a strong foundation in sight words and decoding words. This listening center will give them a fun, easy way to practice these skills.
