My school is a very diverse school. It is also a title 1 school, which means students lack some resources that others take for granted.
These amazing students are "switching classes" to help in the effort of learning more about all the transitions that will come with being a middle school student.
The students deserve an opportunity to come to school and have a place that says "We want you here and we need you to be happy!" The classroom needs to be an inviting place. Heck, there is a reason Google has slides, video games, and pool tables. People learn when they feel welcomed and appreciated. The classroom is a place to inspire all professions, yet public education is expected to do MORE with less every school year. Also, teaching students who will have jobs that might not even be invented yet is a challenge. Our class needs technology that fits the times.
My Project
The cubbie shelf that students need will be used to store student items. People love having their own personal space. Personal space is a valued gift in a class with 47 students. Students, like all people, want a place to call their own. They want to know that their personal items are safe when others come into the classroom. Also, this piece of furniture will deter others from taking peeks into desks that do not belong to them. It is a kid thing, but as the teacher I try to discourage this type of behavior. We want students to know where items are located at all times.
To be organized requires time, effort, and sustained attention.
Children have few moments to transition and they’d prefer to be doing something else with the time. This piece of furniture will help with our precious transition times within the classroom. When students know where their learning items and personal items are located, they can grab them quickly and be ready to move on to the next lesson or class.
