Ms. Harris from Florissant MO is requesting a classroom visitor through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a visiting program of science demonstrations to see real scientists and understand how science impacts daily life.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if we could take all of our students to our world famous Science Center? What if we found a way to bring the St. Louis Science Center to our students? Our school Science Club is run by teachers who hope to expose our students to more science experiments and experiences.
Our students come from kindergarten to third grade.
Our school is a Title I funded school with the majority of students qualifying for free and reduced price lunches. While we have been blessed with some funding to help in the areas of math and reading, our science curriculum has not. Our students do not typically have the advantages of trips to museums, vacations, or travels outside the field trips provided by the school. Since there is such a need to focus on language arts and math skills, science skills are often not developed as much as the teachers at our school would like. Along with this is the fact that our school is located in an area that has had much tragedy and trauma through the civil unrest recently demonstrated in our community. The teachers have tried to maintain a quality, stable, and fun learning environment. We have developed a Science Club that meets after school. The teachers who run the club are volunteer and have no major source of funding.
We are hoping to utilize the wonderful programs offered by the St. Louis Science Center. My students need a visiting program of science demonstrations to see real scientists and understand how science impacts daily life. While we are not able to take field trips to the Science Center on a regular basis during the instructional time of the school day, we are hoping to get "Smarter Together" by having them come to our Science Club. With the programs we have chosen, the children will be able to participate in live science experiments that we could not offer them on our own. They will take part in experiments and demonstrations showing chemical reactions with air and fire. They will also explore the wonders of physics with activities revolving around motion--for example, how do balanced/unbalanced forces change an object’s motion? They will learn some of the basic concepts of chemistry. They will learn about the laws of motion. Most importantly, we hope the kids will be able to see more clearly how science is a part of their daily lives.
Donations to this project will allow us to provide these awesome experiences to our students which we would otherwise be unable to do.
This will enable our students to think and experience scientific concepts on a higher level. It can change their lives for the better as it can continue to expose them to the world of science. As the majority of all of the new jobs created in the future workforce will be science and math related, this experience will better prepare students for lifelong goals.
