Reading to Learn to Dream!

My Students

Reading is a priority in our classroom. My students love to read and we read for many different purposes. Most of the time, they don't realize they are learning. As Dr. Seuss once said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."

My students come from a very low socioeconomic area in a large urban school district.

Our school is a Title 1 school with all students qualifying for the free breakfast and lunch program. Due to living in poverty, they do not know of the possibilities in our world. They see dilapidated housing and high crime as the status quo. My students need inspiration to begin dreaming about their future. One must dream before those dreams can come true.

My Project

My students need biographies to inspire, encourage, and educate them. I want to do more than introduce them to the possibilities. I want to show them the places they can go! I want to stimulate, encourage, and educate them by introducing them to people who have "gone places." Reading biographies of successful people will illuminate the possibilities... not to mention, deepen their comprehension!

Having biographies in our classroom library will be a constant reminder to my students of the power they can have to change the world!

If I can rescue any of them from the poverty cycle, then I have done my job.
