My students need a new, clean "common" rug to sit on. The one we currently have must be 20 years old. It's ragged, dirty, smelly, and the edges are torn and fraying.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are from low economic status households. The vast majority of them eat the school provided breakfast and lunch. We as a school don't have the funds to purchase a new rug for them to sit on, and our parent organization doesn't either. This would go along way to help our classroom.
My students are great kids.
They don't have many of the advantages that I had growing up, but they still have the desire to learn and I have the desire to give them a firm foundation to be successful. Many of their parents are working hard to keep things together, but many of them work in the evenings and aren't available to help their children with their studying.
The new rug will be used a great deal. It's important that we sit in close proximity to learn new material and have a comfortable place for all of our "whole group" work. We spend approximately 1/3 of our day on the rug. We have our morning meetings there, learn phonics and phonemic awareness there. We begin each subject throughout the day on the carpet for the initial lesson before we break off to work on practicing that skill. Many times students will ask to work with a study buddy on the rug. It's the hug of our classroom, and a very important, central area that is currently in very poor condition and having this new rug would be a very nice upgrade and make our classroom a more comfortable place to grow.
By donating to this project, the students will see that our classroom is a place we can take pride in rather than have an old smelly and torn place to learn.
I'm sure that they will see that because adults feel it is important to take pride in your classroom environment that they will also, and they will continue to recognize that there is a whole world out there looking for them to be successful.
