My students ask everyday to use the laptops and play math games, research or read. However, that doesn't always happen because we only have one laptop cart for 85 third graders. If our class had our own tablets we would get smarter together and learn more.
My third graders this year are so energetic and helpful.
They encourage each other to work hard and ask hard questions. They love learning and would love to have tablets in their classroom to use when ever they need them. At our school approximately 85% of our students have free or reduced lunch. Some of my students complain they don't see their parents very much because they work on weekends and in the evenings. Many students don't have access to the Internet at home and many live with extended family due to circumstances out of their control. Giving them tablets would be a gift for not only the students in my class this year, but for my future students as well.
My Project
My students will use the tablets numerous ways. They will play math games, read books on line, and do research. In science they will be answering the questions, "Why is an animals habitat important to their survival?" and "What are the different types of habitats animals live in and how are they similar and different?" and "What might happen an animal was in the wrong habitat?" They will also be able to use the tablets to practice math facts and reading fluency and comprehension.
If we were able to get this project funded it would give my students the opportunity to take ownership of their animal research projects and do their own research.
They will have more time to practice using technology and have experience using tablets.
