I teach Human Anatomy & Physiology and most of my students are seriously considering going into a health profession. I like to make my lessons as relevant as possible with pictures and hands-on materials. The more hands-on, life-like, material I have, the more it makes sense to the young mind.
Most are either interested in going into the health profession field, but they are all fascinated with how the human body works.
We are a fairly large public school of about 2,000 high-school students. We have at least 25% of the students on free or reduced lunch and at least 25% who live in really nice, upper-class neighborhoods, so we run the gamut in terms of income levels. We have been ranked in the top five of high schools in our state in the past five years and made Newsweek's top 1,000 schools list.
My Project
The students will use the models to examine the interaction of the muscles with the bones of joints in which many student athletes injure, as well as many of our older relatives undergo "replacement" surgery. They will work in groups to not only see in three-dimensions how the joint works, but also research and discuss how certain injuries occur and are treated.
This project will make a huge difference in that the students will not be glued to their seats simply watching a video on an operation and discussing the joints with me, but will get to go that one step further and see the joints in a model form and discuss with each other how the injuries occur and see how intricate the repair job must be.
