I have high expectations for my students and I want them to have a desire for learning. Children, like adults, learn more when they enjoy what they are doing. One of their interests involves technology. I would love to spark a fire of curiosity and a desire to learn in each of them.
I work in a very small, rural, school consisting of 1 classroom teacher in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
We have a large population of free and reduced lunches as well as being a title 1 school. Working in such a small school is challenge yet extremely rewarding. My students are my kids! I have 12 students with very diverse backgrounds. The mind of a child today is different than it was 20 years ago. Students now learn best if they can get their hands on something electronic. This is why I feel that it is extremely important to give my students any and every opportunity I can to help them to be successful, not only in school but in life. This is a crucial time for my students in that I have the job to ensure that concepts of literacy are met before moving on to multiple, and more difficult, content areas.
My Project
I would use an iPad during my literacy and math stations. There are numerous apps that can help build phonics skills, word recognition, fluency, comprehension, basic math skills, counting money, telling time, and doing research on a topic. We currently have one iPad mini for all twelve students to share. A second iPad would benefit my students' education greatly. Students retain information better when they are doing something hands on and something they enjoy. Every child enjoys playing games on the technology we have available today. The difference in the games we would be playing in the classroom versus at home is that they will help increase understanding and improve scores.
My students would benefit greatly from having access to an iPad during their small group stations.
My students will not only have had the opportunity to learn new skills in an exciting way, but they will also be more prepared for the world around them; an increasingly technology dependent society.
