My students need iPads to help create a literacy center. There is this resource availble to Educators, for free, called EPIC! It is like netflix-- but with books!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading matters! I want my students to be proficient readers and will do anything in my power to help them get there. All the apps and resources out there like EPIC! Make reading easily accessible and fun. You can create a profile, track your pages turned and parents can get email updates!
The school is located in a urban setting, predominately Hispanic population.
The school is 100% Free and Reduced lunch but most students have access to a parent/caretakers phone or tablet. I want my students to be able to have accounts on educational applications. I desire them to utilize those apps outside of the classroom.
My Project
Having Ipads in the classroom will create a norm of what to do on them like reading. I have my personal Ipad in the class and have found too many to count literacy applications, that are free, and the students love! I would be thrilled to offer more tablets so my students can rotate during the day and hopefully want to "log in" at home.
Donations towards tablets will improve my classroom because tablets create opportunities for students to read!
I recently read (while using my tablet) that more than 80 percent of low-income families—are not proficient readers by the end of third grade. There are significant, long-term consequences per child, yes, but also for their community and our nation as a whole.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
